A minimalistic poster depicting Entropy. The word comes apart as it crosses the page — not disorder, but the arrow of time drawn as typography. Boltzmann's equation counts the ways a system can be arranged, and he had it carved on his gravestone in Vienna.
S = k log W defines entropy as a count. W is the number of microscopic arrangements a system can take while looking identical from outside; entropy is the logarithm of that number, scaled by Boltzmann's constant. There are vastly more ways to be spread out than to be tidy, which is why things spread.
Source. Ludwig Boltzmann, 1877. The equation is carved on his gravestone in Vienna, in the Zentralfriedhof.
Why we made it. It is the rare equation that explains something you have already noticed: coffee cools and never un-cools, and the reason is arithmetic rather than physics acting on the coffee.
Works at a desk, where it can be read close up, and in a kitchen, where the joke lands.
Entropy poster ships flat and unframed. Delivery, returns and damage cover are set out in full on the FAQ.
